Windows Phone 7

Well since nobody here has really talked about this I’d thought I try to bring it up. And my opinion if it will be better than the iPhone/Android/Whatbeit.

First I’ll just tell the tech facts about it. Firstly, it’s based on the same kernel that Windows CE6 is based on. Also the same kernel the Zune HD uses. Which is an upgrade because Windows Mobile 6 was based on the CE5 kernel.

Now the UI of it is very interesting and very pretty. First you have the home screen which is full of several ‘blocks’ that can be personalized to your choosing.

For anyone who has used previous WindowsMo versions you can clearly tell Microsoft spent a lot of time trying to make this version look puurdy. No longer do you have to use that little stylus to tap that start menu and tap the application again. One of Windows Phone 7’s premier features, in my opinion is pushing the brand towards a ‘finger friendly’ experience.

Now on the the applications. That’s all anyone seems to care about these days. Well in the first party applications instead of being conventional and making the application scroll up and down like any other device. In Windows Phone 7 you go from left to right and vice-versa.

As you can see it works horizontally instead of verticality.

Another thing you can see if that Microsoft clearly modelled this after the Zune HD interface. Which was a good decision in my opinion.

As for an actual ‘app store’ Microsoft has that covered too! It’s called the ‘Windows Phone Marketplace’. But Microsoft says this will be much more than some ‘app store’. You’ll be able to buy content from Xbox Live games, to your favourite music.

Another big part of this is the new Xbox Live integration. You will be able to login to Live with your gamertag and download live games. You can play these games on your phone and earn gamerscore to go towards you Live account. You can also send messages and do anything else you’d be able to do on your Xbox 360.

Now two things Microsoft did that drives me crazy.

  • No Multitasking
  • No Copy & Paste

Those are two things that were always held against Apple and it’s iPhone. And with OS 4 the multitasking will be fixed and then it will have everything people held against it gone. And I know this will probably be fixed with a firmware update in the future but why not have the things you’ve mocked Apple for not having in the first version of Windows Phone 7?!

And now my final take. I think this Windows Phone 7 is the most intergrated phone OS ever. You’ll have your Hotmail, Xbox Live, Facebook, etc all in one location. And MS takes the opposite approach that Apple took by letting you customize everything. But one major thing helps Windows Phone 7 is that it’s just an OS. It’ll be on a lot of different kinds of phones. Meaning if you want a messaging phone, you can have it with this, if you want a candy bar phone, you can have it with this, and etc. While the iPhone OS is just locked down to one form factor. But to say this is better than iPhone OS or Android is nearly impossible as it is not out yet and we don’t have a physical phone we can buy yet.

Keep in mind that this is a very brief breakdown and I will be posting more info when more info become available.

Chromium OS!

Hey, you. Yeah, you with the netbook. Have you been wanting to try something new on it? Yes? You have? Well your going to find this tutorial very useful then.

Well you may have heard Google announced an OS called Chromium. It is basically a web browser with some extra features. Mainly aimed at netbooks and smaller computing devices. Now, I know you want to try it so here are the instructions:

1. Download the Chromium image from Hexxeh’s site.

2.  Extract the image to a directory of your choice.

3. Now follow one of these steps:

If you’re on Windows:

Download Image Writer for Windows (http://bit.ly/7gRu0n) and extract the program. Launch the program, and select the image (ChromeOS-Cherry.img) and your USB drive letter from the drop down box. Click “Write”. The install image will then be copied to the drive. Once it’s done, close the program and you can then boot from the USB drive.

If you are on Linux:

Extract ChromeOS-Cherry.img and run the following command in the same directory as the file, where X is the device name of your USB drive.

sudo dd if=ChromeOS-Cherry.img of=/dev/X bs=4M

Once the command finishes, you can then boot from the USB drive.

Lastly but not least, if you are on a Mac:

Firstly, unmount the drive you want to install Chromium OS to. Place the downloaded file onto your desktop. Open System Profiler, click USB on the list at the side and then select the entry that represents your USB disk. Now look for the BSD Name column (http://bit.ly/5mG4WK). Remember what is written here. In my case, it is disk1, but in yours it may be different. Take care here as if you get it wrong, it could seriously mess things up. Once you have this, open up Terminal and type the following commands.

cd Desktop
tar -zxvf ChromeOS-Cherry.tar.gz

For the next command, replace X with the name of the disk you found earlier, ie disk1.

sudo dd if=ChromeOS-Cherry.img of=/dev/X bs=4m

This command will ask you to enter your password (the same one you enter when installing software for example), type it in and press enter. This command will take a while to run, about 20 minutes for me, and then will give you your shell prompt back once it has finished. Once it has, you can remove your USB drive and boot from it

And a little info, you can’t actually boot into it on a Mac, it wont work.

Now, if you’ve done the steps properly you can now boot from your USB and try out Chromium OS.

If it didn’t work check out this FAQ and if you still can’t solve your problem PM me or post a comment.

Enjoy!

All credit goes to @Hexxeh for making this build possible. I was just a tester. :P

The “Eco-Box”!

The new Eco-Box is currently only on the 360

The new "Eco-Box" is currently only on the 360

Well, you bought a copy of Modern Warfare 2 or L4D2 you may have noticed the box felt a little ‘cheaper’. This is because both those titles are using a new kind of box witch uses 20% less plastic and 31% less carbons so you can kill civilians and feel good about not killing the Earth.

My Review of GT PSP!

Well it’s been a very long time since GT was first announced and GT fans have been waiting a really long time for it. Was it worth the wait? We we’ll find out.

Presentation:

When you first turn the game on you will see a very nice cut scene video followed by a set of very sleek menus.

Once you start the game the visuals are very impressive for a PSP game. The road textures and the car models are very well detailed. But sometimes this isn’t very consistent in the car textures. While a Nissan GT-R looks has very nice detailed logos, a Nissan 350z has very blurry textures and you can’t even distinguish the Nissan logo from a smudge.  The tracks look good but the backgrounds are very blurry and pixely, but it’s acceptable for a PSP game. Overall I’ll give graphics 8/10

Gameplay:

Well it plays how you’d expect a racer to play. The physics feel good when you turn them to simulation mode and the AI sticks to the racing line and offers very good competition once you get to the S rank. As for the controls, a lot of people dread the PSP’s nub while I found it did the job for GT. The arrow keys just didn’t seem responsive compared to the nub. Overall I think gameplay is 9/10

Other Details:

The game has over 800 cars but some of them just count as the same car but with a different paint job. For example there is a “Ford GT’ then there is a ‘Ford GT (No stripe)’ also there are only four dealers available at a time witch can be annoying if you have a million+ credits and you keep getting Toyota in your dealer. And there isn’t a way to tell if you already own the car unless you open it up and read the details. There isn’t an option to organize your cars by power in your garage, either.

Overall I think the game is worth the 40 bucks but really doesn’t compare to the console experience you get with GT on the PS3 or Forza on the 360. But it is the best racing experience on the PSP, everywhere did get better.

Overall: 8.5/10 (Go get it!)
